Heart of Glass

2015_Heart_of_Glass_

Heart of Glass is the outcome of a workshop project over several semesters which was part of the MA course in product design at ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne). The objective was to explore the design potential of glass as a material for the area of art and design in a way that would be both practical and experimental. Under the direction of highly regarded designers and glass experts, and in cooperation with glassprocessing companies including both craft workshops and industrial enterprises, students had the opportunity of studying traditional and state-of-the-art techniques and methods of glass processing and trying them out in practice. The presentation of the objects created in connection with the workshop, in the form of an exhibition, a publication and a website, constitutes an integral part of the project, which would like to see itself as a model case study for the practice of creative design research at colleges of design.

Comments of the nominators

This research project has succeeded in illuminating the different approaches to design and production involving glass, and illustrating the potential of the material. The didactic presentation of the research results also makes an excellent impression.
